Educational process at the Doctoral School

As part of their education, the doctoral students learn about the methodology of scientific research and get acquainted with advanced tools for planning and conducting research and formulating results. Another immensely crucial element of a scientist’s work is the ability to hold scientific discourse. Therefore, the doctoral students at the PBS Doctoral School acquire skills to write, publish, and present scientific work. We strive for our doctoral students to have broader scientific knowledge apart from their development in a given discipline. For this reason, the doctoral students attend lectures held by the finest specialists, experts in their respective fields, where they learn about the current trends in development in various fields of science and technology. Conducting scientific research is very expensive, so throughout practical classes the students also gain skills of obtaining funding for their research from national, private, and participatory funds. As future academic teachers, the participants of the course also gain pedagogical competence. On the other hand, as future contributors to the economic sector, the doctoral students learn how to transfer scientific knowledge onto the economic grounds.

The timeframe of the Doctoral School schedules 4 years of education. In the first three months of the course, the Scientific Discipline Council appoints a supervisor or supervisors and an assistant supervisor who directly oversee the scientific development of the doctoral student. The student then needs to formulate a Personal Research Plan required to pass the first year of the course. This plan is a specific road map of scientific research and other undertakings that ultimately lead to attainment of the doctoral degree. After the second year, the student undergoes a mid-term assessment of their scientific progress, which is mandatory for continuing the course. Consistent adherence to the Personal Research Plan and steady progress in the role of an academic teacher should allow the student to receive a doctoral degree promotion after 4 years. Throughout this entire time the doctoral student receives a doctoral grant in the amount regulated by the appropriate legislation.

Educational process

Most of the classes are shared between all of the disciplines, but some subjects, due to their specific nature, are held separately for either technical disciplines or natural sciences disciplines. Fully completing the curriculum of the PBS Doctoral School guarantees achieving education level equivalent to level 8 within the Polish Qualifications Framework.
